Eero Aarnio is the designer and innovator behind some of the most recognisable and beloved Finnish furniture pieces of the 20th century. Eero Aarnio is also one of the most copied designers in the world, and his most iconic design “the Ball Chair” is also his most copied work.

Eero Aarnio Originals is the manufacturer of and the brand behind Aarnio’s original designs. The brief was to create a logo for the new company, with the objective of the logo acting both as the symbol for the global brand and as a certificate of authenticity. Therefore, the logo had to be easily recognisable, but difficult to copy.

The legendary ball chair.

The target audience for the new logo are consumers both familiar and unfamiliar with Aarnio's works. For this reason we kept the approach very straightforward: the name of the designer was brought to the forefront in a big way. The creative idea was quite simply based on the shape of Eero Aarnio's most iconic design, the Ball Chair, designed in 1963. As the logo is also a certificate of authenticity, it will be engraved onto all authentic Eero Aarnio Originals products. Three-dimensionality gives the logo depth and originality. Round shapes and playfulness are important and recognisable elements of Eero Aarnio's work, and we wanted to highlight this in the logo. Social media was an important aspect in the design process as well; the logo was designed with the space restrictions in mind, so that the logo would work in all the channels the brand is present in.

The logo achieves exactly what it was designed to do; it acts as an instant way for the consumer to recognise Aarnio's brand and products, maintaining the iconic designer's spirit and aesthetic. Since the launch, the brand has enjoyed 40% yearly growth. The logo was also well received by design world. It was awarded with a Pencil at the D&AD Awards. The D&AD Professional Awards are recognised globally as the ultimate creative accolade, entered and attended by the best from around the world.
